Research study

Reflections on research study

Reflections on working with different research study modules across Programmes. These are summarised with the following diads representing factors that affect the student and staff experience.

Structure

Loose structure
Progression determined by student
double Highly structured
Phases and deadlines pre-determined.

Content

Limited coverage of theory
Simplified theories accessible to novice researchers
double Comprehensive
All terminology explained incl paradigms

Support

Support on demand
Progression determined by student
double Highly structured
Tutor driven tutorials and submission deadlines

Assessment

Generic criteria
General Level descriptors used.
double Detailed
Multiple criteria and grade-related statements

Ultimately these decisions are about judgement. Judgement has traditionally been that of the lecturer and based on experience. In 2014 is this still the case?

Judgement

Lecturer judgement
Based on experience.
double Student judgement
Fair application of published criteria.
